Keep reading to learn more about camellia seed oil and all of its skincare benefits.

What is Camellia Seed Oil?

Camellia seed oil (also known as "tea seed oil") is an ingredient native to Japan. Used in Japanese culture for centuries, camellia seed oil has long been a treasured beauty secret that Japanese women and Geishas have used for its hair and skin benefits.

The seeds are produced from Camellia, a genus of flowering plants indigenous to eastern and southern Asia. There are hundreds of species of Camellia, but the plant used most commonly to extract this beautifying oil is the Camellia oleifera. As part of the tea family, the camellia plant is rich in antioxidants that help defend the skin against environmental stressors.

Its golden-yellow hue and lightweight consistency mean it sinks beautifully into the skin to boost radiance, moisture and support a healthy glow (without a super oily finish). Camellia seed oil is nourishing, rich in antioxidants and hydrating fatty acids, and is a must-try ingredient for a glow-boosting, natural beauty skincare routine.

What Are the Skin Benefits of Camellia Seed Oil?

Camellia Oil is Deeply Nourishing

Camellia seed oil is full of nutrients and fatty acids that make it one of the most moisturizing, protective oils on the market. To give you some insight into why it's so great, here are some of its superstar components:

Oleic Acids:

Camellia seed oil contains omega 9 oleic acids that have been shown to soothe dry skin, redness, and irritation while increasing skin's suppleness and moisture levels. These fatty acids are also anti-inflammatory, supporting healthy skin recovery and appearance.

Linoleic Acids:

Camellia seed oil is also rich in omega 6 linoleic acids, which provide moisture and plumpness to the skin without weighing it down. In addition to boosting moisture retention, linoleic acids protect skin with their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties.

Vitamin A:

Vitamin A is a potent antioxidant that is fantastic for the skin as it helps minimize the appearance of aging, supports acne-prone skin, and boosts the skin's protective defenses.

Vitamin E:

The vitamin you know and love! Camellia seed oil is high in antioxidant vitamin E, which helps defend the skin against premature aging, sun damage, pollution, and other irritants.

Squalene:

Squalene is a natural lipid that we produce in our own skin. It's highly emollient and super moisturizing, so it's incredible for protecting the skin barrier against water loss, pollutants, and irritants.

Camellia Oil is Lightweight and Non-Comedogenic

Camellia oil is incredibly nourishing, but it is also lightweight. Meaning that it will penetrate quickly into the skin, so your skin looks healthy and dewy—not oily and greasy. This also makes camellia seed oil a knockout ingredient for all skin types since it won't make oily skin oilier, and it will hydrate even the driest skin types.

The consistency of camellia seed oil also makes it the ideal carrier oil, which is why we love it in our Superfood Beauty Oil. Camellia seed works amazingly alongside other superfood ingredients like hemp seed oil, olive oil, and dandelion leaf extract to moisturize and nourish the skin.

Camellia seed oil is also non-comedogenic, meaning that it's an oil that won't clog your pores. So those with oily, acne-prone skin don't have to worry about breakouts and can just enjoy having hydrated, plump, youthful-looking skin.
