Skincare for Men: Why It's Important and How to Create a Simple Routine

While much of the world's skincare advice and advertising is targeted at women, it's no secret that men need skincare, too (even if they don't want to admit it). For men, the world of skincare can be overwhelming and straight up-confusing—how often do I need to wash my face? Why are there so many types of serums? This overwhelming sensation leads men to sacrifice a good skincare routine for the ease of splashing water on their faces and using whatever is lying around.

But an effective skincare routine doesn't have to be complicated—all it takes is a little commitment, consistency, and quality advice. And that's where we come in. For all you need to know on how to build an effective, simple skincare routine for men and why it's important, keep reading.

The Importance of Men's Skincare

A simple skincare routine can provide loads of benefits for men. Sure, it may take a few extra minutes out of your day, but here's why it's worth it:

1. It Protects Your Skin Barrier

A skincare routine that includes a moisturizer and ingredients like humectants, emollients, ceramides, and antioxidants can help strengthen your skin barrier. A strong skin barrier (aka the outermost layer) protects the skin from external aggressors like bacteria and pollution.

2. It Improves Acne and Blemishes

A skincare routine, especially one that has acne-fighting ingredients, will remove excess oil and bacteria that can get trapped in pores and cause acne. Certain skincare products and ingredients can also treat current acne and acne scars to brighten and even skin tone.

3. It Protects Your Skin from Premature Aging and Skin Cancer

Dry, unprotected skin is bound to develop fine lines and wrinkles (maybe even earlier than you were expecting). Even the most basic of men's skincare routines should include a moisturizer or facial oil that provides the skin with nourishing ingredients and a mineral-based sunscreen that protects your skin from UVA and UVB rays that can cause sunburn, premature aging, and even skin cancer.

4. It Helps You Look Good and Feel Confident

Maintaining a skincare routine will keep your skin healthy, strong, and youthful for years to come, so you can look and feel your best and always put your best skin forward.

A Basic Men's Skincare Routine

All you need to do is stick to the basics. Here is the perfect, simple routine for any man just getting started on his skincare journey.

Step 1: Facial Cleanser

First and foremost, you're going to want to cleanse your skin and wash away the dirt and grime from the day. Using a gentle facial cleanser, once or twice a day (morning and night) will be enough to cleanse the skin without stripping away all those good natural oils.

Choose a wash that has hydrating ingredients. If you want to target oil and acne, use one that has a dose of salicylic acid or witch hazel, but be gentle and don't overdo it. If you want to brighten skin and gently exfoliate, find one that uses fruit enzymes like pineapple and papaya.

Step 2: Moisturizer or Oil

For most men, finding a moisturizer that doesn't feel too heavy on the skin is crucial. Using a lightweight oil, like our Superfood Beauty Oil, will provide the hydrating and moisturizing ingredients your skin needs to maintain its health and strength. Our oil absorbs quickly into the skin and is non-comedogenic, so you don't need to worry about it clogging your pores.

Step 3: SPF (Day Time Only)

In your morning routine, you need to apply mineral-based sunscreen every day to protect your skin from harmful UV rays that cause premature aging and skin cancer. Find an SPF with a formulation that makes you want to wear it and layer it on top of your moisturizer or use it on its own during those hotter, more humid months.
